Présentation :
During times of high solar generation, especially during the day, the network can become overloaded. This situation makes it harder to balance supply and demand and fully use the renewable energy generated.
To help tackle this challenge, Hyperion entrusted Omexom Portugal to deliver a 10 MW / 40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Cavaleira energy hub in Estremoz, east of Lisbon. This project complements a 51.8 MW solar power plant that Omexom is already developing. It is part of a larger strategy to integrate renewable energy more effectively into the national grid.
Delivering a Smart Storage Solution
The battery storage system will store extra electricity when renewable production is high and release it when demand rises. Omexom’s teams are responsible for the engineering, civil works, equipment installation, cabling, grid connection and advanced control systems required to bring the project to life, supported by the expertise of Omexom Conversion & Storage in France.
“Their expertise helps us to nail down the technical and contractual aspects, which are so crucial for a first BESS project,” says Luís Silva.
Once commissioned, the BESS will play a key role in improving grid flexibility and reliability. By storing renewable electricity and releasing it when needed, the system will help reduce energy losses, smooth fluctuations in power generation and maximize the value of clean energy production.
The project also highlights the potential of hybrid renewable developments. Alongside the solar installation, Hyperion is developing a wind farm at the same location. Together, solar and wind generation, supported by battery storage, will optimize the use of the site’s grid connection, delivering renewable power more efficiently throughout the day and night.
“The Client´s aim is to maximise the authorised injection point by combining solar energy by day with wind power at night, with the BESS as a balancing mechanism,” explains Luís Silva.
As countries continue to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, battery storage is becoming an essential part of the energy landscape. Projects like Cavaleira demonstrate how storage solutions can unlock greater renewable integration while supporting grid stability and energy security.
