Electricity networks in Finland today are under more pressure than ever due to growing energy demand and the need to withstand storms, heavy snow, and other extreme weather conditions. In Central Finland, these challenges are especially evident, as falling trees regularly damage overhead power lines and disrupt local distribution grids.

As part of Elenia’s Säävarma program, Omexom is helping deliver weather-resilient distribution grid infrastructure that improves the reliability of supply while preparing local networks for long-term growth, electrification, and the integration of new energy resources.

Strengthening Infrastructure for Future Energy Needs

Building on its ongoing partnership with Elenia, Omexom has now secured a new agreement to modernize distribution grid infrastructure in the Kivijärvi area and strengthen the long-term reliability of local networks.

Aging overhead lines are vulnerable to severe weather, increasing the risk of power outages and maintenance needs, which in turn affects residents of Kivijärvi, Kannonkoski, and Kyyjärvi, whose daily lives depend on a resilient grid. At the same time, utilities must prepare their networks for future energy needs and the broader electrification of society.

Preserving Local Expertise and Response Readiness

Beyond infrastructure challenges, there is also a need to preserve local expertise and ensure rapid fault response capabilities across the region. Having a skilled workforce close to the network is critical not only for operational efficiency but also for customer service and grid reliability.

The new framework agreement includes the appointment of Omexom as the contractor for the construction of distribution networks in the Kivijärvi area in 2027 and 2028, with the possibility of two additional one-year extensions. The upgraded infrastructure will also increase the capacity of the grid and help prepare the network for future energy requirements.

The project, which combines underground cables and overhead lines, aims to make the distribution grid more resilient to weather-related disruptions and to support the systematic development of the region’s electricity network.

The framework agreement also enables close cooperation between Elenia and Omexom, ensuring that grid projects are carried out safely, efficiently, and with minimal impact on local residents. At the same time, the partnership strengthens fault response readiness across the region, helping ensure that expertise remains close to the communities it serves.

Delivering Benefits Beyond Grid Performance

Modernizing distribution grid infrastructure is about more than reducing outages: it’s about building the networks needed for electrification, renewable energy integration, and long-term economic development.

  • For Omexom, the agreement delivers more than a pipeline of distribution grid infrastructure projects. It creates continuity for the operations of the Kivijärvi, Kyyjärvi and Kannonkoski regions, enables the long-term employment of skilled personnel, and provides a solid foundation for the development of local operations in the coming years.
