New Distribution Substation in Sävar Strengthens Umeå’s Energy Grid

Umeå is growing more rapidly than most cities in northern Sweden. But much of the region’s existing infrastructure was built for consumption patterns that no longer exist, leaving the grid under pressure.

Addressing this demand necessitates not only incremental upgrades but also the development of new, strategically located capacity. That’s where the new substation in Sävar comes in, a community just outside Umeå where construction is now well underway.

A Grid That Needs to Grow

Omexom took on the role of general contractor for the project, commissioned by Umeå Energi Elnät with INAB as project manager. The substation is designed to operate at 130/40/10 kV, a multi-voltage configuration that makes it one of the larger distribution facilities in the Umeå area.

Engineering Progress, Step by Step

Work started with extensive groundwork, and the project has hit its marks over the past year. The steel structure is now fully erected, and the substation has entered its installation phase, marking the transition from civil works to the technical installations.

Medium-voltage and control equipment installation are in place. Assembly of the 130 kV and 40 kV switchgear is in its final stages, with completion expected before the end of spring. Three new power transformers will be delivered this month and will be integrated as the project moves into its next phase.

The substation is on schedule to be commissioned in fall 2026.

Capacity, Stability, and Sustainability

The technical build is only part of the story. From the start, the project carried a genuine sustainability focus, an electric excavator handled the earthworks to cut down on site emissions, climate-improved concrete was used to reduce the construction’s carbon footprint, and biodiversity considerations were factored into the site design from day one.

Once it’s operational, the substation will add to the capacity and stability of the regional grid, laying the groundwork for further electrification and sustained growth.

The Sävar substation is more than a local infrastructure project. It is a concrete example of what the energy transition actually looks like in practice: intelligent, resilient distribution infrastructure that makes clean energy usable at scale.
