Omexom in New Zealand has been awarded a multifaceted Streetlight Maintenance and Renewals Contract for the Northern area by Auckland Transport. This new contract covers maintenance, renewals, and capital projects.

Building on Omexom New Zealand’s existing streetlighting contract in the region, this new agreement took effect on October 1st and will run for an initial four-year term, with the option to extend for an additional two years based on performance.  The contract includes a strong focus on emergency response times and repair timelines across the network.

As part of the agreement, Omexom Distribution’s Streetlighting business unit, responsible for the contract, is also managing project budgets, with a requirement to remain within 3% of the allocated figures.

Scope of Works

As of today, there are approximately 46,000 streetlights in the northern area of the Auckland Transport network, which are controlled by a central management system (CMS), installed originally by Omexom during the previous contract.

Most of the streetlight network (97%) has been upgraded to energy-efficient LED fixtures and is managed through the CMS.  As a result, there is no longer a need for daytime or nighttime patrols, as issues can be identified and addressed as they arise within the system.

Over the next six years, efforts will focus on enhancing safety and reliability through continued pole replacements.  To support this initiative, the Omexom team has received specialized training on a new pole testing device, which will be used to conduct an extensive testing program. The results of these tests will directly inform the pole replacement schedule over the life of the contract.

In addition to maintenance and renewals, the contract includes a capital works component focused on upgrading pedestrian crossings, key intersections, and other areas where lighting levels fall below the required standards.

Driven by NZGTTM Implementation and Innovation

A standout factor for Omexom New Zealand’s successful bid was its proactive adoption of the new New Zealand Guide to Temporary Traffic Management (NZGTTM), a risk-based system that streamlines pedestrian and traffic management protocols across road networks.

Omexom became the first contractor in the country to implement the NZGTTM under a major contract.  They invested significantly in staff training and developed a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan.

Over the last six years, the Streetlighting BU has consistently set the standard in streetlighting, explains Omexom Distribution’s Streetlighting BU General Manager Barry Passmore.

Omexom participated in the tender process in January 2025, submitting the final proposal to Auckland Transport in February.  Auckland Transport then conducted a thorough evaluation to select a partner committed to operational excellence and value for money.

This achievement reflects the commitment and expertise of the New Zealand team, who have maintained Auckland’s streetlights for over 16 years across three different contracts.

This new contract strengthens Omexom New Zealand’s strong relationship with the city’s transport authority, and highlights its leadership in delivering reliable, safe, and future-ready infrastructure services.
